Scalp Psoriasis Information

Psoriasis of the Scalp

scalpbackMillions of people suffer with Psoriasis.  According to the Nation Institutes of Health 7.5 million Americans are affected.  In as many as half of these people the psoriasis occurs on the scalp.

Psoriasis is not contagious.  It is actually a genetic disorder that compromises the immune system.  It causes skin lesions and sometimes even affects person’s joints.  The lesions occur when skin cells are overproduced.  These red areas are covered in white or silvery looking scales.  They may occur on multiple areas of the body.

When Psoriasis is on the scalp it can be mild or more severe.  In its mildest form a person may experience some itching along with fine scaling.  More severe cases have thick crusted plaques that may be over the entire scalp.  It may spread to the ears, forehead and neck.

Sometimes seborrheic dermatitis is confused with psoriasis.  It also produces lesion but the scales of seborrheic dermatitis tend to be greasy and yellowish in color.  They are also flaky and itchy like those of Psoriasis.

The best way to treat scalp psoriasis is to make sure the scalp is well balanced.  The chemicals in many hair products will dry the scalp and may make the problem worse.  Zinc is a natural ingredient that is helpful in regulating the sebum gland.  The sebum gland creates the oil on the scalp.  If the scalp is too dry or too oily problems will occur.  Jojoba oil and emu oil are also good natural moisturizers.  Psoriasis of the scalp is chronic, but it can be treated with the proper ingredients and care.
