Collagen in Skin Care

Collagen for Skin Benefits

Most everyone understands that collagen is important for healthy skin.  It is the main protein that holds skin together.  The amount of collagen in your skin and the quality of that collagen play a major part in the skins appearance.

Collagen can be damaged by many things.  It is subject to wear and tear over time.  The main causes of damage are usually UV rays, free radicals, and smoking.  Damaged collagen will lead to wrinkles as well as poor skin texture.  As we age the amount of collagen production in the skin also declines.  This decrease in collagen and the breaking down of the collagen that is left in the skin is what leads to wrinkles.  Other signs of aging such as drooping and sagging skin are also a result of collagen loss.

It is not merely enough to add collagen to the skin.  In order for collagen to work properly it must be deep in the skins dermis.  Collagen added through creams is too large to penetrate into the skin.  Objections are an option, but the do have drawbacks.  One is that the collagen is generally derived from animals and this can cause an adverse reaction.  The collage injection will plump the skin temporarily, but because it is not a part of your skin it tends to break down quickly and wrinkles will return.

To keep skin looking more youthful the skins own collagen production actually needs to be enhanced.  You want to actually produce new collagen to reduce wrinkles not just cover them temporarily. There are creams with ingredients that can help with this process.  Vitamin C is one ingredient that has been shown in studies to increase collagen production.  Vitamin C is known to rejuvenate the skin and with regular use help it to look younger.   There are also other key peptides and amino acids that can help reduce free radical and stimulate collagen synthesis.  Matrixyl 3000 is a relatively new ingredient that has been shown to reduce deep wrinkles.  Hyaluronic acid works to exfoliate and rejuvenate new skins.  These ingredients when used together over time can increase collagen production and make skin look younger, smoother an overall healthier.
